Wehkamp and Fuss on sources of deforestation

The latest UN Climate Change Conference in New York Very has very clearly shown the importance of forests for international climate mitigation: Until 2030 a stop of deforestation and the installation of supply chains without deforestation are scheduled to be established as an international goal by 150 governments, companies and civil society. It is an association like never before.

This context highlights the importance of research on ecological and social compatible forest polices. Therefore, from October 6th to October 12th Sabine Fuss, head of working group Resources and International Trade at the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC), as well as MCC PhD student Johanna Wehkamp will join the 2014 International Union of Forestry Research Organizations (IUFRO) in Salt Lake City. Within a session on synergies between REDD+ and forest policy Johanna Wehkamp will give a scientific talk about her research project “Institutional And Policy Drivers Of Deforestation In African REDD+ Countries”. Sabine Fuss, furthermore, will give a presentation on the goal conflict between bio mass production for bio energy and the preservation of bio diversity.

IUFRO is the global network for forest science cooperation. It unites more than 15,000 scientists in almost 700 Member Organizations in over 110 countries, and is a member of ICSU. IUFRO is a non-profit, non-governmental international network of forest scientists, which promotes global cooperation in forest-related research and enhances the understanding of the ecological, economic and social aspects of forests and trees. Scientists cooperate in IUFRO on a voluntary basis. The World Congress “Sustaining Forests, Sustaining People: the Role of Research” aims at showcasing the scientific expertise and activities in current forest research to address the range of sustainability challenges and opportunities.

The MCC is organizing, together with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and the Enviromental Defense Fund (EDF), a session on Global And Regional Deployment Of Biomass & CCS (BECCS): Reconciling Top-Down And Bottom-Up Approaches And REDD+BECCS Nexus.
