30.01.2018

Ottmar Edenhofer, Director of the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) and Chief Economist at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), was elected to the Leopoldina in January by its renowned members. The election is a special recognition of the scientific achievements and the personality of Edenhofer, who is also a professor at the TU Berlin for the economics of climate change. The honor is awarded by strict standards and requires a broad agreement of the extended Presidium.

The Leopoldina is one of the oldest, without interruptions existing academies. For more than 350 years it has been working beyond the boundaries of specialist fields and countries through a free association of scholars in the sense of a humane scientific development. In 2008, the Leopoldina was appointed as the German National Academy of Sciences. In this capacity, it represents the German scientific community in international committees and speaks out on social and political questions, providing a nonpartisan, factual framework for discussion.
