MCC participates in several COP events

The MCC, together with the BDI and Germanwatch, will host a side event at the COP 22 in Marrakesh - and particpate in several others.

The Federation of German Industries (BDI), Germanwatch (GW) and the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) urge the G20 countries to introduce carbon pricing and phase out fossil fuel subsidies. The side-event “G20-Policy Options towards Pricing Carbon” will bring together voices from business, civil society, decision makers and think-tanks across the G20, who will share insights into the situation in their respective countries and sectors.On Wednesday, November 16th, from 6.30 to 8.00 pm at the EU Pavilion, we will discuss challenges and opportunities for a G20-roadmap towards carbon-pricing, and explore strategies and policy options to create momentum within the world’s leading economies. The Event is organized by Christoph Bals, Policy Director of Germanwatch, Prof. Dr. Ottmar Edenhofer, Director Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) and Deputy director and chief economist Potsdam-Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), and Holger Lösch, Member of the executive board of the Federation of German Industries (BDI).

The MCC is also involved in the side-event “The Global Carbon Budget 2016 and its implication for meeting global warming targets” organized by the Global Carbon Project (GCP). It will provide an analysis of the Global Carbon Budget to 2016  and their drivers, assess the potential for negative emissions and discuss the feasibility of keeping global warming well below 2°C or 1.5°C. Speakers are, among others, Glen Peters from the Center for International Climate and Environmental Research and Sabine Fuss, Head of the MCC Working Group Sustainable Resource Management and Global Change. The event will take place on Monday, Nov 14th, 4.45-6.15 pm, in the Arabian Room.

Another side-event with MCC involvement is hosted by the Havard Project on Climate Agreements. MCC Director Ottmar Edenhofer will participate in a panel discussing the topic “Realizing the Potential of the Paris Agreement”. This panel will consider how the Paris Agreement can be elaborated, implemented, and complemented—so that its considerable potential to advance mitigation and adaptation can best be realized. It takes place on Thursday, Nov 17th, 11.30 am-13.30 pm, in the Arabian Room.
