Climate and global security: MCC conference on occasion of its tenth anniversary

What solution-oriented options for action does science provide for climate policy, and how is the current geopolitical crisis changing the underlying conditions? This is the focus of a high-level conference of the climate research institute MCC (Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change) on Wednesday, 14 September, in Berlin. The scientific think tank, which advises policymakers on socially balanced decarbonisation of the economy, among other things, and whose expertise is in additional demand in the current energy price crisis, is celebrating its tenth anniversary with this event.

“We are in intensive dialogue with politics, business, and society with our excellent research – and we are also engaging in discourse on the occasion of our birthday,” says MCC Director Ottmar Edenhofer. “We are looking ahead and exploring policy paths towards climate neutrality at an extraordinary time.” MCC, founded jointly by the Stiftung Mercator foundation and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), began operations at the beginning of September 2012.

The event will be held in English. In a keynote address, Jennifer Morgan, State Secretary at the Federal Foreign Office and Special Envoy for International Climate Action, will speak about the current twin crises. Title: “Climate change, the global commons, and security: a new paradigm for the 21^st century?” How the world can achieve climate neutrality despite geopolitical tensions will also be discussed by three high-profile panels of international experts.
