MCC scientists will travel to Katowice to attend a number of events and discussions. This time the question won’t be whether or not to take action against climate change but how to implement tools and actions to develop a just transition to reach the 1,5°C goal.

At the UNEP side event The Emissions Gap Report 2018 – the emissions gap and options for bridging it key findings are being presented and accompanied by an interactive discussion between panelists and audience regarding the following questions: to which extent are G20 countries are on track with the Paris agreement goals? What are the key opportunities for enhancing ambition and accelerating action? Who are the leaders and laggards and what can countries learn from each other?

Focusing on Impacts for a more sustainable and responsible consumption the GCA roundtable aims to increase the understanding on how the demand side is an important part of climate action needed to achieve the long-term aim of the Paris Agreement, as the supply policies, technologies, and investments alone may not deliver the needed reductions in emissions to meet the 1.5C goal.

How can we achieve climate neutrality across key economic sectors? is the question that will be discussed at Emerging Science on 1,5°C: Mitigation Pathways to Paris, while considering options for making it a ‘just transition’.

Climate resilient urban infrastructure. The G20 work on adaptation aims to make lessons learnt available to G20 and their partner countries on this and other key questions around building resilience. As existing and additional urban infrastructure must be resilient to climate variability and climate change to fulfill its functions.

The Talanoa Dialogue will wrap-up the preparatory phase and transition into the political phase. The meeting at COP24 will represent the culmination of a one-year process in which participants have engaged in discussions to take stock of the collective efforts in relation to progress towards the long-term goal of the Paris Agreement and to inform the preparation of nationally determined contributions (NDCs).

The MCC/PIK side event Planetary Boundaries and Global Commons – managing risks and solutions presents a concept on how to create a safe operating space for humanity within Planetary Boundaries and the sustainable use of Global Commons like the atmosphere, which are combining natural and social sciences to safeguard our future. As in times of weather extremes, food security, migration people's livelihoods depend highly on climate stabilization.

The BMZ side event Pursuing 1.5 degrees: Opening up new opportunities for economy & development, implementing the SDGs aims to discuss opportunities for raising awareness and action that the development benefit dimension of climate action remains underreported and underdiscussed. The challenges of ambitious climate policies can create new development prospects with substantial economic and social gains. The earlier action is taken, the greater the potential to achieve synergies with the SDGs.

In many scenarios negative emission technologies form an integral part of achieving the “well below 2 degree” target in the Paris Agreement. Demystifying negative emission technologies will give an overview over different technologies, their state of readiness, costs and impact and will give examples on where and how CO2 emissions are already captured and stored.
